some site updates

Published by beth under wp & bloggy stuff

Have upgraded this site to WordPress 2.3.3 in anticipation of the next WordPress release (Any Day Now), which looks like it’ll have some slick administrative UI enhancements. All-in-all, the 2.3 upgrade went more smoothly than I expected; followed the instructions (and clapped for joy after discovering my awesome hosting service, pair, has phpMyAdmin installed so I don’t have to do my own install/maintenance. I <3 them dearly.), and yay, all my old content is here and available. The biggest issue I've seen so far is trying quickly find a new theme that will work with this version (and that will hopefully work with the 2.5 version); the main site for themes doesn’t appear to have a filter for version compatibility, and I’m finding it a royal PITA to sift thru this simple list of compatible themes. Until I find a different one that suits me, some stuff here may appear broken.

One of these days I’ll also actually get back to posting proper content. :)

The Librarian Song

So, screw all the things I had queued up that I wanted to post before this; this is a 30-second post, those ain’t. :)

For the record, I’d be one of the librarians peeing myself. Well, maybe not peeing, but definitely giggling.

10 Cheesiest Star Trek Classic Creatures

Published by beth under Entertainment, TV

I’m happy to see that the Horta made the list. For some reason, that’s the creature that I most remember from classic Trek (well, aside from the Tribbles). Always made me think of pizza.

Even in my dreams I’m a nerd.

Published by beth under General, Humor

This morning I woke up early, snerking at a still-fresh dream. I could be hip, suave, and svelte, in my dreams — in the past, I’ve even been able to fly — but no, these day’s my subconscious still knows I’m a nerd.

In this particular episode, after a chain of odd-and-unrelated events, I found myself in a bar talking to a reporter-type that was friends with my brother. As I recollect, this “reporter” was rather Veronica Mars-esque (complete with cool cap similar to this thing that i totally want to learn to crochet… but that’s for another post), though tended rather a lot more toward the entertainment/tabloid end of the reporting scale rather than toward the NYT. She was bemoaning the fact that she was having difficulty getting an interview with Patrick Dempsey, despite being at some function-or-other where he was in attendance.

Veronica Mars Reporter-type Chick, exasperated: “I had such trouble trying to pin him down. And then there was this Wil Wheaton guy…”

Me: “Wait, what? Wil Wheaton was there?!?” … me, becoming highly irritated I wasn’t informed about this little shindig, nor invited.

VMRTC: “Yeah, so?”

Me: “Jeez. Wil Wheaton is much cooler than McDreamster or McDreamy or whatever the hell he’s called. I can’t believe you didn’t tell me.”

VMRTC, eye-rolling: “uh-huh.”

Me, with a Look,IKnowOfWhatISpeak,YouPoorThingToNotBeEnlightened expression: “Oh, yeah. Totally.” Like, Duh.

Hah. I have no idea from whence that nugget came; perhaps related to an ad we saw recently for Dempsey’s newest movie, and the fact that I follow Wil Wheaton’s tweets and have his latest book on my bedside table (which I’m enjoying as much as I did his previous books). He’s also a big ol’ geek (which you already know if you read his blog), and a McGeek like that, particularly one who can write so eloquently, and with such humor, about tech & geek life, trumps a McDreamy any day of the week.

If I were a Peanuts Character, I’d be…

Published by beth under Entertainment, Humor

Today’s useless online quiz:

Which Peanuts Character Are You?

You are part Charlie Brown. You are always optimistic and persistent, and everyone appreciates your simple sweetness. Sometimes, however, your anxieties get the best of you, and life’s mysteries can confuse you.
You are part Schroeder. You are brilliant, ambitious, and brooding; you tackle tasks with extreme focus. People don’t always interest you as much as other pursuits, though, so you can come off as aloof.

ToDo in 2008: Go to England, take in some RSC productions

Published by beth under Entertainment, Travel

I first read Hamlet when I was in high school during the year Dad was my English teacher. I loved it. Studied it again my first year at Colby for a Freshman Seminar course on “The Fate of Being Human”, and have seen three movie versions of the play (hate Gibson; love Branagh; alas, can’t remember Olivier). I’ve only once seen it performed live, however; something I’d like to experience again.

This blurb from The Stage about the Royal Shakespeare Company’s upcoming season makes me wanna put on my travelin’ shoes:

Gregory Doran will revive his production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and direct Tennant in both Hamlet and Love’s Labour’s Lost, in which he will play Hamlet and Berowne respectively. Patrick Stewart will also feature as Claudius in Hamlet, while an ensemble of actors will be cross-cast across all three plays. It is expected that Hamlet will later transfer to London.

Sigh. How FREAKIN’ AWESOME would it be to see Doctor Who and Jean-Luc Picard in one of my favoritest plays evah?
